The Inception of Ringways


Ringways was birthed from a necessity for practice in writing and implementing narrative arcs in games. 

The design needed to be modular in a way which would allow quick implementation of new stories in a standalone episodic manner, while still allowing a common connection point between the stories.

From this concept spawned the idea of fantastic adventures taken by a player or party through a mysterious and ancient portal ring device.

The idea was heavily inspired by Stargate: SG-1 as well as other exploration and discovery games such as The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, Subnautica and a particular concept for portal usage I found on Reddit in the Tomb of Annihilation campaign for D&D 5e.
